[uklinux-status] syn flood attack and planned outage

Since 5pm yesterday afternoon one of our servers has been subjected to a 
serious and continuous syn flood attack.

We have implemented countermeasures, and have notified our upstream, but 
whilst it continues it may have a small effect on network performance.

It seems that the only effective ways of dealing with syn flood attacks 
are either to have enough bandwidth at the relevant point to absorb them, 
or to trace them back to their source and cut it off, which is difficult 
when all the packets have forged from addresses. :(


Planned Outage
--------------

We have been notified by Telenor that they will be replacing their 
core router in Manap tomorrow at 6pm, and there will be downtime of 'up 
to' 30 minutes.

This will affect all webhosting services, but will not affect email which 
is hosted on a completely separate network.
